Why Do Athletes Rush Back from Injury? - Athletes Share the Struggles Behind Their Comebacks
For an injured athlete, one wish often rises above everything else: getting back to the sport as soon as possible.
Sometimes, though, that desire can get in the way of recovery.
“I Want to Be Back with My Team”
David | High School Basketball Athlete
Basketball player David suffered a serious injury: an orbital blowout fracture in the floor of his eye socket. Even before his vision had returned to normal, he tried to get back on the court. His reason was simple.
"I wanted to play because I wanted to be with my team."
Being separated from the team can be harder for an athlete than the physical limitations of an injury. They want to be out there competing alongside their teammates. That pull can lead them to rush back before they are ready.
Looking back on playing at that time, David recalls that he was still seeing double. In hindsight, it may have been too soon to return.
“I Couldn’t Perform the Way I Expected”
Carson | High School Basketball Athlete
Carson suffered a serious injury that required surgery. His doctor had told him recovery would take 16 to 18 weeks, but he returned after 13.
Once he was back, he realized his body was not as ready as he had expected.
"I definitely do think I came back too soon."
Returning to a sport and being ready to compete at your usual level are not the same thing. His experience captures a struggle many athletes face. There can be a significant gap between feeling “good enough” and being truly ready.
“I Focused on Getting 1% Better”
Shane | Collegiate Volleyball Athlete
While recovering from a severe ankle injury, middle blocker Shane learned an important lesson from his trainer.
"Getting 1% better every day."
Rather than looking for a dramatic breakthrough, he focused on what he could do that day. Those small gains added up, helping him move toward his return. His experience highlights the value of steady progress rather than a rushed recovery.
What to Remember When You Want to Rush Back
The athletes featured in Beyond the Injury share a common lesson: there are no shortcuts to recovery.
Everyone recovers at a different pace.
What matters is trusting your own recovery process rather than comparing it with someone else’s. Feeling impatient can be a reflection of how much your sport means to you.
But when it comes to staying in the sport for the long run, being ready to return with confidence may matter more than getting back as quickly as possible.
Recover. Rebuild. Return.
Injury is not the end.
