2-TIME OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST MISTY MAY-TREANOR
JOINS ZAMST® TEAM

Newport Beach, CALIFORNIA (August 12, 2011) --- Two-time beach volleyball Olympic Gold Medalist, Misty May-Treanor, 33, was named as the new spokesperson for sporting goods brand ZAMST, the leading brand of injury prevention equipment in Japan since 1992 and used by professionals worldwide. May-Treanor (Newport Beach, Calif.) recently began the process of qualifying for her fourth Olympic Games with Olympic gold medal partner, Kerri Walsh (Los Gatos, Calif.). The pair returned to active competition in April and is currently ranked second in the world with gold medals won in Beijing and Moscow, and a runner-up finish at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships in Rome.

May-Treanor becomes the first female athlete signed to a contract with the ZAMST brand in the U.S., and with parent company Sigmax America, Inc. based in Newport Beach, Calif., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nippon Sigmax Co., Ltd of Tokyo, Japan. She will headline ZAMST’s injury prevention team of professional athletes as the global spokesperson and advertising icon for the brand that emphasizes the importance of injury prevention as part of a high performance training regimen.

“I approach my training with great care and effort, taking the time to do all the things that make me healthier, faster, and stronger. Using ZAMST injury prevention products and following basic injury prevention procedures as part of my training routine helps protect my body and allows it to perform at a higher level on a more consistent basis,” said May-Treanor.

May-Treanor first began her relationship with ZAMST through a partnership with her successful M2 Volleyball Camps & Clinics, a business she started in 2010 that organized indoor and beach volleyball clinics nationwide. In addition to sharing her wealth of knowledge on the court, May-Treanor incorporated important information about nutrition, academics, and injury prevention, all of which are main staples of the ZAMST corporate philosophy. At each M2 Volleyball session, ZAMST advisors and representatives shared some basic information about injury prevention, and which ZAMST products ranging from ankle braces, to knee braces, and icing kits work best to keep athletes in top physical shape.

“I appreciate the high quality of ZAMST products, especially the unique materials and construction of their products. ZAMST pays close attention to the high performance needs of elite athletes better than any other brand I’ve tried. I use the ZAMST IW-1 knee icing kit after every practice and competition as part of my regular injury prevention routine. Icing is one of the most important ways to minimize injury, and the ZAMST IW-1 knee icing kit is the best and most convenient way for me to ice properly,” said May-Treanor.

“Misty May-Treanor is one of the finest athletes that we have ever witnessed in Olympic history, and her commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through sport embodies our philosophy at ZAMST,” said Hajime Takada, President and CEO of ZAMST USA. “One thing that we appreciate most about Misty is her willingness to share her life experiences and her knowledge of injury prevention with such an open and positive attitude. We are very proud to have her leading the ZAMST family of world class athletes and sports medicine professionals,” said Takada, himself a top tennis athlete in the early 1990’s at May-Treanor’s alma-mater Long Beach State University.

ZAMST is the leading brand of sports protective equipment in Japan and used by professionals worldwide. ZAMST offers a full line of high quality injury prevention products, featuring unique materials and construction designed for its three tenets of “Effectiveness, Comfort, and Ease of Use” as they relate to the ultimate in sports performance.
ZAMST® NAMED OFFICIAL INJURY PREVENTION PARTNER OF MOUNTAIN PACIFIC SPORTS FEDERATION MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (April 26, 2011) --- ZAMST®, the leading brand of injury prevention equipment in Japan since 1992 and used by professionals worldwide, has joined forces with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) as the “Official Injury Prevention Partner” of the MPSF Men’s Volleyball Championships, to be held at the Galen Center on the campus of the University of Southern California. MPSF teams compete at the NCAA Division I level in men’s volleyball, with the tournament champion earning an automatic berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Volleyball National Championship to be held May 5-7 at Penn State University’s Recreation Hall in University Park, Penn.

The MPSF sponsors men’s volleyball competition at 12 institutions, including 2010 NCAA National Champion Stanford University, Brigham Young University, the University of Hawaii, Long Beach State University, Cal State Northridge, Pacific, Pepperdine University, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, and the University of Southern California. The 3-year agreement includes sampling of ZAMST products to member schools, a scholarship program for athletic trainers, and support of the referees and line judges as a key component of the promotional strategy, a first in the history of the sport.

“The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) is proud of this exciting new relationship with ZAMST. They are at the cutting edge with exciting new developments in athletic support gear for elite athletes and their products represent the next generation of injury prevention on the court and on the field for athletes at any level. MPSF men’s volleyball is at the top of the collegiate game and ZAMST will help keep the athletes competing at the highest level. The MPSF and ZAMST are the perfect match,” said Al Beaird, MPSF Commissioner.

"MPSF Commissioner, Al Beaird (center in black) with one of the many MPSF officiating teams proudly supporting ZAMST, the Official Injury Prevention Partner of the MPSF"

“Our focus at ZAMST is on injury prevention to allow the athlete to perform at the highest levels on a consistent basis. We appreciate and support the great work of the many athletic trainers keeping the student-athletes injury free for peak performance,” said Dr. Gary Sato, D.C., a ZAMST advisor and current assistant coach of the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team. Sato, a graduate of UC Santa Barbara, is keenly aware of the high level of competition in the MPSF having coached with Dr. Marv Dunphy at Pepperdine University when the team captured the 2005 MPSF Conference Championship en route to winning the NCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship. Since it was established in 1992, MPSF teams have captured the NCAA title a record 16 times, more than any other conference in the country.

Beaird and ZAMST executives will execute a new marketing strategy based on the company’s philosophy of supporting the “team behind the team.” In cooperation with ZAMST, the MPSF will announce the formation of a scholarship opportunity for men’s volleyball athletic trainers at MPSF member institutions. ZAMST will provide a $150 scholarship annually for the two trainers whose teams reach the MPSF Championship Final, to be used towards continuing education units or membership fees in the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). In addition, ZAMST will supply outfitting for the MPSF officiating teams, including product contributions of its unique bracing products for the back, waist, knee, and ankle. In fact, several referees and line judges have already begun wearing ZAMST with successful results.

“I have been using my ZAMST knee brace before and after my arthroscopic knee surgery and I love the support and comfort level my ZAMST ZK-7 knee brace provides. I was able to play right up to the day of my surgery and was back on the court only four and half weeks after surgery. My ZAMST knee brace gave me the support I needed and the peace of mind to get back on the court and to not worry about my knee,” said Tony Chan, an MPSF referee who successfully uses the company’s products.

“Few companies have ever supported the officials in any conference, so the MPSF men’s volleyball officials take great pride in being part of the ZAMST team. Our officials take their job very seriously, and take pride in being an important part of the ‘team behind the team’ along with the many athletic trainers and event management staff at each school,” said Ken Taylor, MPSF volleyball officiating coordinator.

The MPSF sponsors competition in men’s volleyball and 10 other Olympic sports serving 1,800 student athletes from nearly 40 universities in the 12 Western States. The MPSF was established in 1992 to serve the competitive needs of member institutions from the Big West, Pacific-10 and Western Athletic Conferences, as well as other selected universities in the western United States; and to provide championships competition for Division I intercollegiate Olympic sports in a conference setting. The founding principles on which the MPSF was originally formed were to provide enhanced competition and championship opportunities for sports without conference affiliation; to contain the costs of competition; and to ensure the survival of sports impacted by Title IX and other fiscal pressures. Since its creation, the MPSF has emerged as the nation’s premier conference in men’s volleyball, and has produced close to 60 volleyball Olympians (players and coaches) including 2008 Olympic Gold Medalists from Hawaii, UCLA, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine University, BYU, Long Beach State, and Stanford.

"The USC Trojans, the number one team in U.S. men’s college volleyball, will host the MPSF Men’s Volleyball National Championship April 28 & 30 at The Galen Center, one of the premier sports venues in Los Angeles"

ZAMST is the leading brand of sports protective equipment in Japan and used by professionals worldwide.
Advisory Board Spotlight: Sherrise Smith

Sherrise Smith is a living legacy to her father’s memory. The late Homer Smith suffered a fatal heart attack only hours after watching Sherrise and her Cal women’s basketball team play at USC back in 1997.

“I was inspired to play basketball through my father’s interest and participation in the game. He was a pioneer in girls’ grassroots basketball . He assisted young athletes to obtain collegiate scholarships and continue their education,” says Sherrise, who founded the non-profit basketball association Got Game Basketball based in Los Angeles, Calif.

Sherrise was a highly recruited guard from Santa Monica’s (Calif.) Crossroads High School. From her father’s mentorship, Sherrise earned a full athletic scholarship to the University of California at Berkeley, where she was a four-year starter and a key force in the Pacific 10 conference. The death of her father along with two serious knee injuries stalled hopes for a professional career, but guided Sherrise to focus her attention in another area of the sport, coaching.

“Due to my in inability to compete professionally, I was inspired to coach and train future and aspiring basketball players. I incorporated Got Game Basketball in August of 2004 to help young women obtain their basketball dreams and goals, though professional coaching and mentorship from former collegiate and professional stars.”
Sherrise suffered two major knee injuries as a student-athlete at Cal. They were significant enough to end any hopes for what would have been a promising professional career in the WNBA. In her freshman year, she suffered a dislocated knee cap. She underwent a surgical procedure called a lateral release, in which doctors took connective tissue from the side of her knee to facilitate the movement of her kneecap back to its proper place in the center of her knee. In the second half of her sophomore season she suffered a torn Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL). During her PCL surgery, doctors discovered that Sherrise had a partially torn meniscus and chondromalacia. Her rehabilitation went well, and she eventually returned to the court in Cal’s 1998 season opener against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she scored seven points and had four assists in 17 minutes of action. Although she continued to show tremendous progress both on and off the court, team doctors advised that continued play would prove detrimental and could lead to more severe injuries. She started to channel her drive and determination to helping motivate and teach the other players on the team. She cites her experiences as a collegiate student-athlete with having great influence on her philosophy of injury prevention, knees in particular.
“After my injuries, I learned the importance of proper training and development of all muscles; not just the dominate muscle but all the smaller tendons and muscles surrounding the joint. I learned that it is important to strengthen and have flexibility in the quad, hamstring, and calf areas in order to prevent injury. I believe that the Zamst product properly supports and provides the flexibility for rehabilitation without the element of restriction that many orthopedic braces provide.”

Through Got Game Basketball, Sherrise reaches literally hundreds of kids each year. Her students range from the beginner to the most advanced level, with teams competing nationwide and players earning college scholarships to top universities. Sherrise also works with professional players as a personal coach, and recently started Got Game’s “The League,” the only NCAA-sanctioned summer league and by all accounts a huge success with players coming from all across the U.S. She has worked with the top players in the game, including WNBA superstars, Lisa Leslie and Candace Parker. Got Game Basketball provided much needed wear testing and participates in research and development projects for Zamst through Sherrise’s involvement on the Zamst Advisory Board.

“I share with every athlete that I coach or mentor the importance of using a product like the Zamst IW-1 or IW-2 to ice after competition as well as to do a proper warm up and cool down. I advise all my players that it is important to work hard during workouts and push yourself to the limit, not just to earn a starting spot or a scholarship, but to learn the value and importance to staying fit as a lifestyle not just to achieve immediate goals.”

Sherrise is a great example of a commitment to excellence both on the court and off. She has successfully translated her own accomplishments and experience as a top level athlete into her coaching and business career.

“The most influential people in my career were my coaching staff and players that were professional athletes. Observing their drive and commitment to excellence on the basketball court and off the court. Their commitment to self improvement mentally and physically inspired and motivated me to be my best.”
Gary Sato Returns from 2010 FIVB World Championships

In October, Sato traveled with Team USA to the 2010 FIVB World Volleyball Championship in Italy where the team competed to a sixth place finish.

“The last World Championship I coached was in 1986 (USA won the championship) so there have been quite a few rule changes: Rally score, the libero position, taking the first ball overhand, serving from along the entire endline to name a few but those are easy to adjust to. What impressed me the most is the depth of the field. In the top 10 there are some big strong players and teams that all know how to play the game dynamically as well as consistently and on any given night beat up on one another,” said Sato.

When asked about the key differences in past world championship competitions. Sato explained that injury prevention and experience are key factors for teams maintaining their competitive edge. He cited the importance of maintaining balance between 1.) the players’ physical health; 2.) their mental health; and 3.) their overall wellness in maintaining that ultimate competitive state.

“In my research and experience the balance of the three is critical to more effortlessly achieve peak performance. So at all times we are working to improve all three. We are very fortunate to have a fantastic Director of Sports Medicine and Performance, Aaron Brock, who keeps the players in fine working order,” said Sato.

“2011 is a critical year for USA Volleyball. We will compete in the FIVB World League in a pool with Brazil, Poland and Puerto Rico. Then we will compete in the NORCECA zonal (in the Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico) to qualify for the World Cup in Japan which will be the first opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games. There will be other competitions but the last two are the most crucial at this time,” said Sato.

The U.S. Men’s Team, comprised of veterans and talented new players, will use their experience from the World Championship to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.
ZAMST Advisor Mark Newton receives Positive Coaching Alliance’s Double-Goal Coach Award

Mark Newton, 40, is the Head Football Coach at the Menlo School (Atherton, Calif.) and noted in the development of elite level youth athletes through his work in personal coaching and fitness programs at the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement in the San Francisco Bay Area. Newton received Positive Coaching Alliance’s Double-Goal Coach Award for his positive impact on youth athletes, an
award presented to 20 of the nation’s top coaches as nominated by their peers and players. The award is named for coaches whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. Newton received his award at Positive Coaching Alliance’s 2010 National Youth Sports Awards Dinner held at Stanford University’s last April.

“Mark wins on the scoreboard, and more importantly, he wins by creating a positive, character-building sports experience for youth athletes,” said Jim Thompson, PCA’s founder and executive director and author of several books on coaching and sports parenting, including the just-released The Power of Double-Goal Coaching. “Ultimately, the youth athletes Mark coaches are the real winners, and as those athletes become tomorrow’s leaders our society as a whole wins.”

Wrote one of Newton’s players in his nomination: “(Coach Newton) always loved to say, ‘Relish the joy in facing adversity….His impact has affected every aspect of my life with friends, relationships and academics, not simply football.”

“Mark is a great example of positive coaching and mentorship, and his dedication to enriching the lives of his student-athletes both on and off the field is an amazing example of what this award represents,” said Lori Okimura, Zamst marketing executive and long-time friend of Newton’s.

Newton’s only results-oriented goal is to win the Central Coast Section Scholastic Championship for the team with the best grade point average; last season the team achieved that goal for the third time in the last six years and played in the CCS Championship game. What most excites Newton about coaching is “helping adolescents at a time that is very formative for them, a time they’re never going to forget and that can really set a baseline and foundation for the rest of their lives,” Newton said. “We focus a great deal on leadership skills and mentorship and relationships. Football just happens to be the medium we use.”

Newton’s 2009 team finished as California’s Central Coast Section (CCS) Division IV runner up, and claimed its third CCS Scholastic Championship title (Newton was quarterback of Menlo’s 1987-1988 championship team). Newton’s football squad was selected for ZAMST product testing in 2008 and played an important role in the decision to launch Zamst products in the U.S. Newton himself was a star quarterback at Menlo and a member of the football team at the University of California, Davis before pursuing a career in coaching that includes work at the Peyton Manning Passing Academy, Elite 11 and Nike SPARQ Quarterback Camps, and USC Football Camps in Los Angeles. He was Director of Development at the Riekes Center for Human Enhancement in Menlo Park, California, featuring state-of-the-art training devices for elite athletes and physical therapy facilities. Newton holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History from the Univ. of California, Davis. In addition to his duties on
the field, Newton is a Dean at Menlo School, one of the nation’s top college preparatory institutions, and teaches World Religions and U.S. History.
ZAMST Advisor Dr. Gary Sato travels to Italy with USA Men's National Volleyball Team

The defending Olympic gold-medal winning USA Men’s National Volleyball Team will take the court in Italy for the 2010 FIVB World Championships September 25-October 10 with a new roster, of veterans and rookies combined, but one of the familiar faces, will be assistant coach and Zamst Advisor, Dr. Gary Sato. Sato had been involved with the U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team for more than 20 years when he rejoined the team as assistant coach under Head Coach Alan Knipe in the summer of 2009.

“After seeing the teams perform so well at the Olympic Games in Beijing, it rekindled the fire in me,” Sato said. “The situation with the men’s program, being in Anaheim and the women moving there was similar to the circumstances when I first joined the program in 1984 (when both teams were based in San Diego).

“I’m excited to be back. I was telling people that USA Volleyball had gone green and they recycled me.”

In his first year back as an assistant coach, he helped the team to a victory at the FIVB World Championship Qualifier, a second-place finish at the NORCECA Continental Championship and a sixth-place in the FIVB World League. He led the U.S. Youth National team to a silver medal finish in 2010, with a young and energetic roster that included his son, Andrew. Sato, known in the volleyball community as a great teacher of the sport, took a very hands off approach to his son’s volleyball training.

“I think the part I played in Andrew’s development, I tried to make everyone around him better, so it would rub off. I didn’t work with Andrew as much. He was smart, he picked up a lot of stuff on his own.”

Sato and Team USA open preliminary play at the FIVB World Championships against Mexico (Sept. 25), followed by Argentina (Sept. 26) and Venezuela (Sept. 27). Seven players on the roster are veterans of the team that won the 2008 Olympic gold medal as well as the 2008 FIVB World League title: Outside hitters Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.), Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) and Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.); middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah); setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) and libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.).

The other players on the World Championship roster are outside hitters Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) and Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.), middle blockers Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio), setter Tyler Hildebrand (Mesa, Ariz.), opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) and libero Alfee Reft (Oxnard, Calif.). The two new players are setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.) and opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.).

U.S. Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) will lead the team, assisted by Sato (Los Angeles, Calf.) and Tom Hoff (Park Ridge, Ill.). U.S. Men’s Technical Coordinator Chris Jackson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and athletic trainer Aaron Brock (Storm Lake, Iowa) will also travel with the team. Greg Vernovage will serve as the team’s manager. Andrew Gregory and Keith Feder will be the team doctors.

Sato first served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men’s Team from 1984-88, including the team that won the 1988 Olympic gold medal in Seoul. His brother, Eric, was a player on that team. He was also an assistant for the teams that won the 1986 World Championship and the 1987 Pan American Games. Sato served as head coach for the U.S. Men’s gold-medal win at the 1985 FIVB World Cup in Japan and was voted the Most Valuable Coach of the tournament. In 1992 he returned as assistant coach for the Olympic Team that won the bronze medal. Sato’s coaching career has included pro beach championships and he was the head coach for the U.S. beach team at the 2007 Pan American Games.

Sato played volleyball at Santa Monica High School and Santa Monica College before moving on to UC Santa Barbara, where he was an All-American outside hitter. Sato is the eldest of six children known worldwide for their contributions to the sport. Brother Eric won the Olympic gold medal with the U.S. Men in 1988 and a bronze in 1992. Sister Liane won the Olympic bronze medal with the U.S. Women in 1992 and also played on the ’88 Olympic team. Brothers Scott (San Diego State) and Glenn (Loyola Marymount) both played college volleyball and Glenn also coached at the University of Southern California.

Sato graduated with a degree in kinesiology from Pepperdine University where he took over the head coaching position of the first-ever women's team in 1979 and held it until 1982. He has also won two NCAA National Championships as an assistant and volunteer coach with Pepperdine’s men’s volleyball teams in 1978 and 2005. From 1989-92 Sato studied at the Southern California University of Health Sciences and graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic. Just prior to rejoining the U.S. Men’s National Team in 2009, Sato worked at Sato Chiropractic along with serving as a coach for the Santa Monica Beach Volleyball Club and as the technical director for the Sinjin Smith Volleyball Academy.

Sato has three children Andrew (17), Katie (14) and Malia (11) and resides in Los Angeles, Calif.
French male basketball team has just won 4 friendly games. First against Austria with a victory of 98 to 57, then French players won 82 to 44 against Belgium, and the day after, 84 to 66 against Czech Republic. Finally, they finished this beautiful series by winning against Hungary in a really tight game with a score of 70 to 69.

Those results are promising and we can envision a victory against Italia the 5th of August 2009 in the first qualification game despite the uncertainty of Tony Parker’s participation.
